The challenge given to this team of Brigham Young University engineering students seemed like a mission impossible. They were asked to create a sustainable building material for people living in impoverished villages in Mozambique. The catch? It had to be made from resources readily available at little or no cost. Also, the material would be required to withstand harsh weather conditions during the monsoon season. The students from BYUs Fulton College of Engineering and Technology worked with Care for Life, a nonprofit based in the United States and Mozambique. They ended up choosing a cheap building material from an unlikely source: termite mounds. According to the UN, South America and Africa lose forests at a faster rate than anywhere else in the world. After years of civil war Mozambique is trying to rebuild itself from the ruins, but the development comes at a great cost to the country's natural resources. The rich hardwood forests of Mozambique are currently under threat. Trees are being chopped down and burnt into charcoal, which supplies 80 percent of Mozambicans with fuel, as well as a steady source of income. But the destruction of this precious resource is unsustainable - and not only threatens people's livelihoods but also has serious climate change implications. One small village near the coastal town of Beira, however, is challenging this trend by putting forest conservation at the centre of community development. The ...

Termites, which are most often associated with destroying construction, not aiding, turned out to be the solution to a pressing problem. Soil used for bricks needs to be at least 15 percent clay, but the soil in the targeted areas in Mozambique is mostly sand. Termites, though, apparently love clay, because the soil from their mounds is a whopping 75 percent clay. In addition, mounds are accessible close to almost every targeted village. Based on their recommendations, the inSCALE APE CommCare mobile phone application was developed by Malaria Consortium in partnership with the Inhambane Provincial Health Directorate, Dimagi, University College London and London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. The film shows community health worker Halima in Inharrime District, Mozambique using the inSCALE APE CommCare mobile phone application. The 2,600 kilometre gas pipeline from the Rovuma Basin in northern Mozambique to Gauteng province in South Africa is expected to deliver gas to towns in Mozambique along the pipeline’s route. SacOil’s chief executive officer, Thabo Kgogo said the agreement confirms the financing commitments required for the pre-investment and engineering studies phases of the project, and paves the way for its speedy and effective construction and implementation. He added that the first task of the consortium is to start with a feasibility study. If the project turns out to have economic benefits it will then be taken further from a financing point of view. The chief executive expressed optimism that the construction of the pipeline will help trigger economic growth not only in the SADC region but also Africa a continent. “The project will be dealing with solving the energy crisis and if there is an over-supply of energy, industries can grow and stimulate economic growth.” he said. China Petroleum Pipeline (CPP) was preferred because it built a similar pipeline in Tanzania and the fact that it has been in business for more than 40 years as well as having experience in raising funds among banks.
